SPRING TRACK QUESTIONS

Can I park at the parking lot next to the track?

No, only coaches are allowed to park next to the track.

Do I need to let the coaches know in advance if I will not be attending a meet and I previously signed up for the meet?

Yes, you should let the coaches know. If you are on a relay team it is very important that you let the coaches know. 

How long do the track meets last?

The meets usually last between 4 and 5 hours. The meets run on a rolling schedule so there is no way to predict the time of each event except the first event.

What is a relay team?

A relay team consists of EXACTLY 4 athletes.  Each athlete passes a baton from one athlete to the next at a predetermined distance. The winning team is determined by the point at which the last athlete crosses the finish line.  If any athlete cannot run, the entire team will not be able to run, so it is very important that all athletes be there.

What is the deadline for signing up for each meet?

The deadline is Wednesday before the Saturday meet.

What should I eat before the track meet?

It is best to eat some fruit and a small amount of carbohydrates (like a bagel). Do not eat eggs, bacon, sausage, and pancakes, French toast or anything heavy before you run in a meet. It will hinder your performance and you may leave your breakfast at the track!

Where and when are most of the meets held?

They are usually held at Lower Merion High School on Saturday's at 9:00 A.M; however parents should always check the time and place in case of changes.

Why do I have to wear a sweat suit at practice and at the meet?

It is important to keep the muscles warm. This will minimize any injuries.

Why do we have to go through drills before practice?

It is important to warm up muscles and allow them to be as flexible as possible before practice. This generates better performance, strengthens muscles and minimizes injuries.

Yes, you need a uniform to run in a meet. They can be purchased online for $35.00 when you register.

How come there usually are not start times for each event in the track meet?

We usually have a rolling schedule, so the order of the events are known, but not the time.

How long do the track meets last?

The meets usually last between 10 to12 hours a day for two or three days. The field events usually take longer than the running events. Athletes must participate and receive a valid time or mark at the District meet to qualify for the National qualifier meet. To qualify for the National AAU meet, athletes must finish in the top 4 places at the national qualifier meet.

What are the age groups for the AAU Meets?

The age of the athlete is determined by his/her age on Dec 31 of the current year. For example in 2010, an athlete would be considered 15 years old if they were born any day in 1995.

What happens if I miss my race or field event?

You will need to talk to the coach, but this may disqualify you from participating in that specific race or field event in the next meet.
